When we started the B&H Photography Podcast more than six years ago, the concept was “watercooler conversations” with photographers, about gear. Well, honestly, it hasn’t always turned out that way, but this episode with famed photojournalist David Burnett comes as close to that idea as any…

I received my Canon T50 as a birthday present from a parent who knew little about photography. But what I surely didn’t know at sixteen was that this camera would mark the beginning of my photography career and also the beginning of the end for Canon’s FD mount.
A sentence like that could only float by on a pillow of sentimental hindsight, but it is true that my first photo exhibit was…

It’s hard to imagine a more ideal guest for a photography podcast than the wonderful Ralph Gibson. Gibson checks all the boxes—a straight-up master of the medium, a man of insights and tales, with a comprehensive understanding of photography from the nuts and bolts to the conceptual rigors. After training in the Navy, he assisted…

Photography has long been used as a tool to explore and analyze history, but in the hands of an artist, that same tool is not asked to be exacting or accurate to the historical record. If anything, artists challenge this idea of photography as fact. And for this reason, it is such a pleasure to welcome artist and photographer Barbara Mensch to the…

On this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we welcome Malike Sidibe to the show. With just 23 years under his belt, Sidibe has accomplished a great deal in his relatively short time on planet Earth, and not just photographically. But 2020 has been quite a busy year, even for him.…

For our final episode of 2020, we look back at the year that was—and what a year it was. We learned new remote recording skills and virtual conversation styles, but the B&H Photography Podcast never missed a beat; we recorded an episode the very first week of quarantine and have continued recording throughout this unprecedented time.…

I think most photographers have tried to document their experience during the COVID-19 shutdown, but none have done it quite like Neil Kramer. Kramer is riding out the pandemic in a two-bedroom apartment in Queens, New York, with his 86-year-old mother and his ex-wife. Did I mention that this is the apartment in which he grew up…and that he is…

Achieving accurate skin tones in photography can be a life’s journey. Even the most dedicated and technically proficient portrait photographer spends significant time lighting for skin tone and then adjusting the raw images in post-production to get the look they are after. While there is no substitute for accurate lighting or digging into a raw file to make those adjustments, most photographers…

Could it be the sheer scale—the vastness of the oceans and mountains—that enchants us? And is it human folly to try to…
