Today we welcome a special guest to the B&H Photography Podcast: actor and comedian Jeff Garlin. Jeff Garlin is well known as a stand-up comedian and, of course, as a star of the hit television shows, The Goldbergs and Curb Your Enthusiam. About fifteen years ago, he turned a love for photography, for the work of the masters…

After our introductory lesson to creating narrative and telling personal stories with smartphone cameras, I asked my kids to advance their skill set by telling visual stories using a more advanced, more versatile camera. In this case, they’re using my…

As an industry and as a hobby, the numbers indicate that drone flying and drone photography are still primarily the domain of men, but sustaining this disparity is ridiculous and it should and will change. Our two guests today are part of bringing about that change, and they do so by being good at their craft, by spreading the joy of flying, and teaching drone operation and photography to women…

Although we do not ever want to imply that conversations with great women photographers should only be reserved for Mother’s Day, we have recorded a few episodes on subjects dealing specifically with motherhood and with photographers whose work is informed by the fact that they are mothers. Zoom, Hangouts, BlueJeans, Slack, and Teams. These are words that have taken on a whole new significance over the past few weeks. With so many of us now relying on livestreaming, video chat, and video conferences, the quality of connection and the quality of your image is increasingly important. It may be time to upgrade from the camera in your computer or the basic webcam that has been dangling…

Ray Collins’s portraits of waves are hard to describe because you don’t want to describe them. Like the wave itself, the photographic abstraction refuses words; indescribable and amorphous become unique and powerful in his hands. One look at his work and it’s clear that he is in his element in the surf, transforming what he knows so well into a profound and universal statement. We have been…

"What I strive for is an absurd level of old-school greatness." His commitment to film photography,…

One often thinks of inspiration as an epiphany, a cartoon lightning bolt that hits an artist, who then transforms this idea into a sharable gem. While that may indeed happen, inspiration genuinely comes as part of a working process, a process that can be arduous and often difficult to describe. When speaking with food and advertising photographer Chelsea Kyle…

When we really dug into what motivates Karen Zusman to make photographs, her answer resonated more like a poem than an assertion: “I try to get invited inside.” Above photograph © Cory Rice I understood that phrase for its figurative value, although I’m sure the literal is just as important to her work. With just a quick look at her multi…

I love spending time with my kids, lots and lots of time. And while we are passing all of this time together, I thought I’d have a try at teaching them a little bit about photography. I don’t go into this endeavor with any illusions; they are probably going to end up teaching me. My kids were both born well after the year 2000 and, I’d argue, that alone puts their visual acumen far ahead of what…

Does the space in which you work affect the photography you create? This is one question at the heart of our “Inspiration to Process” series and the first question we asked artist David Brandon Geeting when we arrived at his Greenpoint studio. It seemed a fitting question, given the quantity of work he has produced from this…

Ike & Tash are a husband-and-wife photography team. You know what? They tell it better than I can. “We are a FAMILY business, a LEGACY business, a husband-wife team that found our dream and our FUTURE behind the lens. With our 3-year-old daughter, Wisdom, we travel around the country teaching photographers, taking pictures and making memories... all the while helping others to keep theirs,…
