Motorized Pan and Tilt heads have been around a long time—complicated beasts with cable pass-throughs often requiring special operators and control systems. Yes, there are PTZ cameras that have these features built in, but what if you need different features than what are built into a PTZ camera? Sorry, out of luck. But Vinten has created the Vantage, a motorized pan/tilt head with the ability to handle heavier camera and lens packages, providing you the opportunity to use the image-gathering tools of your choice. Pairing the Vantage with the

What is IPP2? you may be wondering. IPP2 is the acronym for Image Processing Pipeline 2 and, with IPP2, RED claims that it has separated the technical adjustments from the creative adjustments. What’s the big deal, you say? How good could it be? Imagine all the candy, from all the candy stores, in all the world—at your fingertips. It isn’t quite as good as that, but it is close.
IPP2 is a new color-processing system that RED has devised, available in-camera in the

One of the most attractive aspects of RED cameras is modularity. The latest DSMC2 camera models are especially flexible, enabling minimalist to “everything but the kitchen sink” configurations that are only limited by your imagination. Since the RED DSMC2 platform provides a blank slate to build a camera, I inquired of my coworkers to see how they would build out their RED camera from the myriad options offered here at B&H. I’ve also included my own thoughts at the end.

When it comes to providing security for your business, perhaps you’re more used to hearing about cybersecurity. While a cybersecurity breach can have far-reaching and long-lasting effects, it’s not the only aspect of security that should raise concerns. My father runs his own business and I can’t tell you how many times someone backed into the railing leading up to the main entrance. Was it a client… could it have been the UPS driver? Finally, he put up concrete posts next to the rail, so now anyone who backs into those will probably be

Ready to learn some more? Good! Last time we talked about the things to think about when buying cameras, and we even took some shortcuts. This time, we’ll cover a little bit about the technology and some specs you should look at, as well as talking a little about storage.
Going Analog in the Digital Age
A few years ago, the surveillance industry pivoted toward IP (Internet Protocol) video after users had spent decades building out analog infrastructure in the form of wiring and storage systems. Analog video used the same sort of signal system

Surveillance varies widely in form and function, since nearly every piece of hardware is designed to suit a specific purpose. A device that will best address the concerns of a bank won’t usually be suitable or necessary for installation in your home. We’ll talk about what questions you should ask yourself when shopping and explain some of the advantages of different solutions. Later, we’ll get into some of the details behind the features and technology. Let’s start by talking about what you should keep in mind before you start shopping.

Welcome back, intrepid explorers of the RED DSMC2 ecosystem! In the first part of this bisected examination of the DSMC2 ecosystem and what it has to offer, I explained the philosophy behind the DSMC2 ecosystem and went over the first three building blocks of a RED DSMC2 camera: the

If, for whatever reason, you’ve had your eye pressed to the viewfinder for the past several months, the news that B&H is now a reseller for RED Digital Cinema cameras and associated products may have passed you by. If that was something that you were pining for, rejoice! However, that exuberance may be slightly offset when you see just how many options are available for building RED cameras. Many cameras on the market from other manufacturers are all-inclusive;

When being in a band is mostly for the fun of it and you have no label backing, usually all production talent (or lack thereof, in some cases) is left to the members of that band. In this case, for my own band, I was enlisted to shoot a music video. We had basically zero budget, as we tilted our investment resources in favor of the recording and production of the song itself. Shooting your own band’s music video is not without its share of hurdles, so here are a few things that I’ve learned from filming my own band’s music video. So, before we

Have you ever wondered: “how did they get that shot, where was the camera attached?” Or how did the cameraperson squeeze, strap, or balance themselves into that position? B&H offers a wide range of options for mounting your video camera for vehicle-based shots, raising your camera above the fray, and otherwise mounting your camera in innovative ways.
A staple of many police procedurals is the shot of the characters riding in the squad car, whether it be the cynical detective and the raring-to-go rookie, or a reveal of the jittery perp in

Looking through an on-set or kit bag, you never know what little surprises you may run into. For example, one Assistant Cameraman (A.C.) with whom I studied years ago, used to carry disposable razors. Why, you may ask? An actor with whom that AC once worked was always worried about his five-o’clock shadow, and the makeup person didn’t have a razor. I didn’t carry around disposable razors, but in my time as a camera assistant, gaffer, and D.P., I assembled a rather odd assortment of items. So, I took a stroll thought the B&H website in

In an ever-changing world, finding a happy medium that satisfies everyone is nearly impossible. When shopping for camcorders, many consumers clamor for larger sensors with their unique aesthetic, while others yearn for the ever-practical smaller sensors for their deep depth of field and ease of use in run-and-gun situations. Enter the latest crop of mid-range camcorders from Canon and Sony. Each brand announced three models. Canon brought out its

Car cameras—also known as dash cams, car cams, or vehicle video recorders—are exactly what they sound like. They’re cameras you install in your car. There are many reasons someone might want one, and there is a bevy of features to be considered when shopping for the right solution. The features can vary a bit, and which are most important will depend on what your concern is. Maybe you’re a parent who’s concerned about the behind-the-wheel behavior of the new teen driver in the house. There’s a solution for that. You run a small business with a

Let us be serious here—the holidays are no time for fooling around, especially Halloween. If you are looking for that last-minute gift for the video maker in your life, party ideas, or just planning for next year, here are a few treats for you.
Atmosphere
Whether you are shooting a film, throwing a party, or just looking to make an entrance, nothing sets the mood quite like fog. While the thought of a fog machine may conjure images of someone in a bee-keeper outfit with some odd contraption that is a cross between a tea kettle, charcoal-fired
