David Adler

In addition to being a writer at B&H Photo, David Adler is a videographer, photographer, guitar player, and all-around tech nerd based in the greater New York City area. While simultaneously working in NYC rental houses, Adler attended CUNY Queens College and received his bachelor’s degree in Media, Arts, and Communications. Always looking to improve his crafts and satisfy his curiosities, Adler constantly keeps himself up to date with the latest goings-on in the media production industries. When he’s not busy researching anamorphic optics and overdrive pedals or discussing the minutiae of 4K, S-Log, and post-production workflows, you can usually find him jamming to some funky tunes in front of a cranked tube amplifier.

In this installment of pro gear discussions, I will delve into what separates professional cinema lenses from their...

It is easy to say that tripods are all basically the same, aside from the size. After all, with few exceptions, they serve the same purpose and operate with the same mechanics. Video tripod systems include the tripod legs, along with a fluid head to top them off. The head and the tripod can be purchased separately—but purchasing them as a system reduces the chances of mismatching your gear. If...

Insta360, as a brand, seems to be bent on building 360-degree cameras whose internal functionality outsizes their physical footprint. While I could describe the new Insta360 Pro2 as six cameras built into an aluminum-shelled grapefruit, I would be remiss in doing so. Insta360 has...

Around the time professionals started to adopt LED lights into more serious lighting setups, I was in college and working part-time at a photo/video equipment rental house in New York. One of the most popular rental items, lighting-wise, was the ubiquitous Litepanels 1x1, now long discontinued and replaced. It was big enough to provide a decent throw, while being lightweight and small enough to...

With an apparent M.O. of manufacturing accessories that take your existing camera and make it more ergonomic, it’s no wonder that Zacuto is one of the biggest names in camera-rigging equipment. Zacuto’s next line of handgrips features locking triggers that enable you to adjust your handgrips on the fly at the press of a trigger, and they are thusly called “Trigger Grips.” Zacuto’s trigger...

While it’s easy to think of BoxCast as a company that makes easy-to-use equipment for streaming video, a lot of that has to do with what goes on with the BoxCast Platform. Since the back end has all the configurations necessary to get your stream out there, the hardware doesn’t need any excessive features to bog you down. The integration of the streaming service, and the advantages that such a...
