The Simera 28mm f/1.4 and Simera 35mm f/1.4 are two of the latest wide-angle prime lenses for Sony E, Nikon Z, Canon RF, and FUJIFILM X mounts releasing from Thypoch, a relative newcomer to the mirrorless world. While the company hasn’t been around that long, producing high-quality manual focus lenses for a variety of mounts is sort of their bread and butter. These lenses were originally released for M-mount rangefinder cameras but the new versions have dedicated mounts to use directly with various mirrorless models.
Both wide-angle primes have classic focal lengths for street, travel, and landscape shooting—the 28mm being a bit wider for more architectural and interior subjects and the 35mm being the everyday wide that’s impressively versatile. And both also have the bright f/1.4 maximum aperture that excels in low-light conditions and offers control over depth of field. Each lens also uses specialized optics, including aspherical, extra-low dispersion, and high refractive index glasses, to control a variety of aberrations for high sharpness and clarity.
Compared to the fastest autofocus lenses and long-range zooms, Thypoch’s new wide-angle lenses target a more traditional and classic approach to lens design, sporting vintage aesthetics and precision builds for fine control over manual focus. Both of these lenses have either black or silver anodized aluminum housings and crescent-shaped focus tabs for a reliable mixture of form and function. The anodized housing is both classy and durable, while the protruding focus tab benefits focusing accuracy and also feels like a classic manual focus lens.
The barrels also sport a unique depth of field scale, which pays homage to Alpa’s Kern lenses, that’s both a nice touch of vintage aesthetic with added practicality for zone focusing needs. Similarly, the aperture ring has an ergonomic profile and tappable sun and moon symbols for switching between clicked and de-clicked operation.
Both of these lenses are available in Sony E, Canon RF, FUJIFILM X, and Nikon Z lens mounts—the Canon, FUJIFILM, and Nikon versions come in either Black or Silver finishes, while the Sony mount only comes in Black.
