Tamron Goes Long Range with 50-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD Lens

If you’re a travel photographer looking for a one-lens solution and tend to prefer the telephoto end of your zooms, Tamron has just announced the ideal all-in-one zoom for you: the 50-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD. This is a wider telephoto zoom, covering from normal to super-tele fields of view—an interesting alternative to the traditional wide-angle to super-tele lens and the pure telephoto zoom. Complementing the unique range is a portable design, image stabilization, and a durable build to further reinforce this lens’s place as a travel companion.

Tamron is introducing this lens for Sony E shooters. It’s suitable for full-frame cameras or as a dedicated long-range option for APS-C, offering a 75-450mm equivalent focal length range. From 50mm to 300mm, this zoom covers effectively all of the focal lengths you would need for portraiture and sports and will be an enticing complement to a wide-angle prime for landscape and nature photographers looking for versatility at the long end.

The f/4.5-6.3 maximum aperture, while not the fastest, is sufficient for available light shooting throughout the day and the VC image stabilization helps avoid camera shake when shutter speeds get longer. The modest speed does, however, benefit this lens in terms of size and weight—it measures 3” x 5.9” and weighs just about 1.5 lb.

Among other unique assets is especially close focusing performance; at the 50mm position, focusing down to 8.7” is possible, which provides a 1:2 maximum magnification for half life-size shooting. At the 300mm position, a 1:3.1 magnification ratio is possible along with a close focusing distance of just under 3’. Autofocus performance should be speedy and quiet, thanks to a VXD linear motor, along with excellent subject tracking performance to keep up with photographing distant sports or nature.

Physically, the lens features a zoom lock mechanism, an assignable Focus Set button, and other settings of the lens can be updated via Tamron Lens Utility, including the ability to update the lens’s firmware. For reliable use, the lens housing is moisture-resistant and there’s a fluorine coating on the front element to shed moisture, oil, and smudging.
