I can remember the SMPTE meeting that took place in 2010. It was a defining moment in digital capture, with discussions comparing three sensor-prism cameras and single-sensor cameras, all following the news that after 88 years, a prominent film lab in New York had decided to stop processing film. Then, ARRI showed the demo footage from its newest digital camera. The subject of the footage was…

Stereography, or stereo photography, harks back the 1800s, so it is not exactly a new idea. However, LucidCam’s Stereoscopic 3D point and shoot camera makes shooting stereo stills and video as simple as pulling out your old point-and-shoot and pressing the shutter release. Pocket-sized so it’s ready…

I love a well-made product, be it camera, grip stand, dolly, or what have you. Working with a product where form, function, and finish come together as a cohesive whole is such a joy. I also must admit that I love poring over a piece of gear, looking for ways to improve it, and I’m willing to bet that more than a few of you are the same. In the cine world, this has led to strong spring-less lens mounts and collimation to tolerances of hundredths of an inch. Even in the ENG…

Despite my inability to operate a Steadicam well, compounded by the motor shake I induce with every one-handed, cell-phone-type motorized gimbal I've tried so far, once built and set up, the Freefly MōVI Pro Handheld Bundle allowed me to make smooth and cinematic camera moves in a…

Casting is one of the most crucial elements of your film—casting the right actor to play the role can make your film, and casting the wrong actor can break it. It is easy enough to get actors interested in your film, and you don’t have to be limited to friends and family unless that is the aesthetic you are pursuing. There are lots of actors, and lots of people who want to be actors, and want to…

Working with a fluid head can be a joy. When set up with your camera properly balanced, it is a boon to your production. However, when set up incorrectly, operating your tripod can be a nightmare. I remember when I just started out shooting, I acquired an Akely Gyro head. It was built for 35mm cameras way back in the early 1900s and used gyros to smooth out operation. And there I was, trying to…

Cinematography, videography, photography: ultimately, it is about showing something in a way that hasn’t been seen before. How you achieve this is a combination of framing, exposure, and post effects. It is the Digital Age—you can create just about any effect you want if you have the time, tools, talent, and software, of course. You can also hire someone to pull it off for you. While either…
