Although I must admit to a fondness for MOS sequences, when shooting dialog, I prefer to get clean sound on set. But this isn’t always easy, and sometimes it’s not possible at all. Fixing audio problems in post is never satisfying, and I start to dream of just doing all the dialog in post. In many ways, this makes sense, as on-set time is incredibly expensive, and never having to do an additional…

Once upon a time, compression was a dirty word, but the reality is that compression is occurring throughout the image taking process. Your lens compresses the image, unless you are shooting 1:1 macro. You could consider the Bayer filter on your sensor a form of compression, (referred to as Color Sampling Ratio) and, of course, there is the codec (compressor/decompressor), format, and bit-rate you…

The Core SWX Fleet Micro battery charger is named so, not because it’s particularly fast at charging (although it is), but because it is ready to charge and maximize your personal fleet of professional V-mount or Gold-mount batteries.
Perspective
In the 1980s, I had an old Cine 60 battery belt. It had a 4-pin XLR output, used NiCd cells, and had a built-in overnight charger. My cat used to sleep…

For example, one Assistant Cameraman (A.C.) with whom I studied years ago, used to carry disposable razors. Why, you may ask? An actor with whom that AC once worked was always worried about his five-o’clock shadow, and the makeup person didn’t have a razor. I didn’t carry around disposable razors, but in…

With apologies to Edgar Allen Poe, the RED Digital Cinema®’s RED RAVEN® camera BRAIN® doesn’t just sit and squawk one word repeatedly. Instead, it is the center point of a powerful camera system that can shoot 4.5K footage at up to 120 fps, with 16.5+ stops of dynamic…

I recently had the opportunity to try the Feiyu a2000 gimbal. I've worked with a few camera-stabilizing systems before, and have only recently begun to feel more comfortable with them, so I was happy to try another system. Now, truth be told, I have always felt that for free-form work—I…
