Before talking about a number of tools, tables, and accessories that will improve your tethered photography, let’s just be clear about what we mean by “tethered” photography. What makes a camera specifically well suited for street photography? Good question. In a genre that appreciates the gritty, the spontaneous, the accidental, the mistake, you can pretty much use whatever works for you. If you are comfortable with a camera and can operate it with acuity, the resolution, ISO sensitivity, dynamic range, and all the relentlessly discussed quantifiable factors are much…

Dear Father-in-Law: At one point during all of our vacations and at every big family event, you ask me the same question, “How come my photos look awful, and yours look so good?” While there’s never been an easy way to explain it to you at those moments (and I do love seeing you put your eye up to the LCD monitor to compose) I have always felt that your frustrations don’t lie with your…

I can’t blame anyone but myself. I suggested the title based on the many times I’ve been asked this exact same question. So here I am attempting to answer the almost unanswerable—what camera should you buy for your upcoming trip to Italy, Africa, theme park, or... fill in the blank. To test the new features of Nikon’s D7200 DSLR and show off its abilities, I took two simple strolls from the B&H SuperStore, at 9th Ave and 34th Street, around our West Side neighborhood, finishing one walk atop the Empire State Building, just four bustling blocks from our offices, and the other on the Highline Park as a lovely spring day was coming to a close.
