Rangefinder Camera
Leica has a knack for making cameras that aren’t for everybody, but that everybody wants. The M10-D is a prime example of this—it is one of the most technically hamstrung cameras available today, but still, by far, one of the most alluring. It’s a controversial camera, receiving either the highest praise from those who “get it” or total disregard from those who favor the many more versatile options out there. Regardless of your

As a golfer and as someone who works at B&H, one of the most frequently asked questions I hear on the course is, “What’s a good camera to bring with me while golfing?” Even though
The Mamiya 7 II is the best camera ever made. At least I think so, and I know I’m not the only one who thinks this. It is the perfect mixture of form and function; uniquely precise and casual at the same time. Its system contains some of the finest lenses available during the film era, many of which are still likely optically superior to lenses being developed today. It is a 6 x 7 format film camera—dubbed “the ideal format,” by Mamiya—and this aspect ratio is by far my favorite due to its not-too-long, not-too-squat shape. And, of course, the
I’ve never been a huge fan of converting digital images to black-and-white. My photo background is strongly tied to black-and-white film, and the black-and-white look is something I’ll always associate with film. In my opinion, digital images converted to black-and-white look… processed. Despite this, my curiosity was piqued by the Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) Digital Rangefinder Camera. A digital camera that shoots in black-and-white? This is

Leica has always had a penchant for remaining true to its filmic heritage, and this sentiment rings loud and clear with the newest M-series digital rangefinder, the M10-D. Fresh off the release of the stills-only M10-P, and the true successor to 2016’s unique M-D (Typ 262), the new M10-D takes the core imaging
It is time to sell your gaffer tape stocks, because Leica has just introduced the new version of its very popular M10 full-frame digital rangefinder camera, the Leica M10-P, which is noticeably devoid of the famous red dot brand logo on the front of the body—so there's no need to cover the Leica logo with black tape. Like the P versions of its beautiful film rangefinders, and the P-versions of its more modern digital cameras, the
Founded more than one hundred years ago, Leica has become one of the most recognizable and significant brands in all of photography. Much of this recognition is because of the M series of rangefinder cameras and their proliferation among well-known photographers as one of the most effective tools for capturing intimate scenes, due to their compact size and high quality. Cartier-Bresson, Eisenstaedt, and countless other shooters created some of the most iconic

It has taken me a while, but, over the course of many years I’ve come to understand what makes die-hard Leica lovers tick. Craftsmanship is certainly part of the reason. All of Leica’s M (digital and analog), Q, CL, and TL-series cameras are manufactured in Germany, from brass and metal alloys and plastic parts—only where it makes sense to use plastic. Although Leica’s newer digital cameras are the driving force behind the company’s very existence, analog film cameras remain the theology behind the company’s mission statement.
