Venus Optics is announcing a major leap forward with the Laowa 10mm f/2.8 Zero-D FF Autofocus Lens, the Laowa line’s first autofocus lens and one of the widest rectilinear lenses available. Released in time for Venus Optic’s tenth anniversary, the lens features an ultra-wide 130° angle of view, 4.7" close focusing, and a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture, all while weighing less than a pound.
The first Laowa line lens with autofocus, the 10mm f/2.8 supports focus tracking, further broadening the lens’s capabilities in both video and still applications. At the time of the announcement, autofocus is only available for the Nikon Z-mount and Sony E-mount versions of the lens. A manual focus option is available for Canon RF-mount and L-mount cameras.
Greatly benefiting architecture and cityscape photography, the lens’s “Zero-D” close-to-zero distortion is a product of an optical design that features 15 elements in nine groups, including six ultra-high refractive elements, three extra-low dispersion elements, and two aspherical glass elements. This ingenious lens element organization results in the lens’s rectilinear, ultra-wide field of view that keeps lines straight before the light hits the camera sensor and saves time and image detail in post-production.
Both the autofocus and manual lenses feature the five-blade aperture diaphragm, producing a unique, 10-point sunstar effect. This ability to aesthetically render small points of light, along with its angle of view and wide maximum aperture, benefits astrophotography. Alternatively, there is a separate, solely manual focus version of the lens with 14 aperture blades, which is available for all four mount options.
The lens’s build, at less than 3" long and weighing less than a pound, not only encourages everyday carry, but also features a 77mm filter thread for further light manipulation and expanded creative possibilities.
