About a year ago I had an opportunity to field test the Tokina FiRIN 20mm f/2 FE MF, Tokina’s first full-frame Sony E-mount and only premium FiRIN-series lens. I liked it. In fact, I liked it a lot. The lens was sharp, with strong, saturated colors, and just the right degree of contrast. When shooting up close at maximum aperture, the narrow bounds of whatever is in focus grabs your eyes and guides them as foreground and background detail slowly

Recently, Manfrotto expanded its Befree travel tripod collection, adding some more serious models for photographers who need a bit more support. I was lucky enough to be given the flagship piece, the Befree GT Carbon, to use on various adventures. It is certainly the company’s biggest little tripod, since it has an extremely compact form but with some pro-quality specs. This means it

If there ever was a perfect pocket powerhouse camera, it would be the RX100. Packing a 20MP 1"-type sensor since its first generation, the RX100 series changed the game when it came to high-end digital point-and-shoots—they were among the first that could truly be called “professional.” Each release since then has only further cemented the RX series legacy, and with the RX100 VI, it has kicked things up to 200.

It’s not often that we get to combine our passion and our hobby in life (and even less often to get paid for it), but we recently had the opportunity to do so. On a warm spring day on a holiday weekend, we were tasked with two things – checking out the photographic opportunities in the Adirondacks, an area where scenery is its own dimension, and take a camera of our choosing that we think was up to the challenge.

I have always been of the opinion that if you have a camera and you understand the limitations of what it can and cannot do, you can take acceptable—if not very good—photographs with just about anything that goes “click.” With this thought in mind, I recently went on vacation with two cameras: a “real” camera, specifically a

Several years ago, a news article in the satirical newspaper, The Onion, stated that every resident of New York City had spontaneously decided to leave immediately. The article stated, “… living in a dingy, grime-caked apartment while exhaust fumes from an idling truck seep through your bedroom window isn’t worth slightly bigger bagels.” Well, if you go to one of Brooklyn Bagel and Coffee Company’s (BBCC) locations in Queens and Manhattan, you will find that the hassles and inconveniences of New York City are a small price to pay for their

I wanted to participate personally in B&H’s Macro Week content creation, but I’m not an experienced macro photographer, so I borrowed a Nikon AF Micro-NIKKOR 200mm f/4D IF-ED lens from a colleague, bought an Aputure Halo Ring Light and set out to create interesting and

They cost way more than a jar full of pocket change, but figuratively speaking, premium 24-70mm f/2.8 lenses are a dime a dozen these days. Standard issue among street, wedding, corporate, architectural, sports, editorial, fashion and beauty photographers, fast 24-70mm resonate with just about every serious shooter out there.
The folk at Tamron wanted to join the party but, rather than being the last ones to pull up to the curb, Tamron’s optical engineers decided to design a comparably fast, f/2.8 maximum aperture lens with a focal range a
