New Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 Lens and Speedlite EL-10 Surprise in Size
06/05/2024Canon EF 35mm f/1.4L II USM fans, rejoice! The legendary lens has finally received its RF upgrade with the new RF 35mm f/1.4 L VCM. The latest addition to Canon’s L-series lineup is 27% lighter than its EF equivalent, while maintaining a similar sharpness, character, and lack of chromatic aberration.
Canon has also announced the EOS C400 Cinema Camera and Cine-Servo 17-120mm T2.95-3.9 Lens; click here to read more about their latest cinema line releases.
Aside from being the latest 35mm f/1.4 from Canon, the RF version is also being positioned as a hybrid lens; a lens built to handle both photo and video with ease thanks to a fast and sharp design, manual aperture control, and improved focusing thanks to VCM and Nano USM motors and well-controlled focus breathing. It's also an L-Series lens, which means this wide-angle prime touts high-grade optical quality along with reliable weather resistance.
In terms of focusing, the VCM (Voice Coil Motor) offers incredibly quiet, fast, and smooth focusing that should be able to provide more accurate and consistent results than in the past. This linear focusing motor is paired with a Nano USM, too, which promotes overall greater focusing speeds and accuracy, as well as enables a floating focus design for greater sharpness throughout the focusing range. Together, they strike an ideal balance of speed, precision, and smoothness that suits both photographers and videographers alike.
In addition to the lens, and targeting solely the photo side of the image-making world, Canon also announced the Speedlite EL-10. This flash is intended to be the direct successor to the popular 430EX-III RT but featuring Canon's new Multi-Function shoe that makes it directly compatible with the latest R-series cameras, including the R3, R6 mark II, R7, R8, R10, and R50. In terms of design, it's also going to be an ideal backup or companion to the larger Speedlite EL-5.
The EL-10 sports a guide number of 82.7' at ISO 100 and f/4, uses four AA batteries to provide 210 to 1400 flashes per charge, has built-in radio transmission, and supports E-TTL. It's a perfect portable flash for those looking to step-up from a basic flash model or even an in-camera flash and can also be an ideal everyday carry strobe for working with more compact camera setups.
