When I was younger, 360° films/video meant a huge rig with nine cameras pointing outward in a circle. 360 divided by 9 gives you 40, so each camera had a 40° angle of view, horizontally. The film would be made using these monstrous rigs, sometimes slung from helicopters to get travelling shots of packs of animals hunting in Africa. Of course, you would only have the chance to see this if you were…

If you are looking for the perfect camera or lens to get for that special videographer in your life, that is a tall order. But accessories, now—accessories make the camera package. However, camera accessory purchase decisions can be difficult to make for someone else, but don’t worry—for anyone who owns gear, there is always maintenance. Owning camera gear invariably leads to needing accessories…

In the segment of Show Us Your Shot, Director Roderick E. Stevens and Cinematographer Daniel Gonsalez, in an effort to accentuate the grounded reality of their hero's journey in the latter half of the film, chose to mix shooting styles and formats, including Super 8 film for the opening flashback scenes, 4k RAW (on a Sony F55) for the first half of the roadtrip with the two brothers, and 35mm…

Gregory Blair: If I’m relegated to a single label, I use “Entertainment Professional,” because it is generic and inclusive enough to represent my writing consulting, TV, and theatre work in addition to my various roles in the film industry. SG: How long have…

High end is a subjective term, and in terms of high-end lighting for film and video, you will be able to find such light fixtures in use on a variety of productions, in the middle of a cornfield on the next indie smash, or hanging in a studio grid for next summer’s blockbuster. Really, the best definition for what makes a light high end is that whatever it does, it does it well, without hiccups…

Filmmakers, take heed: the Leitz Cine Primes and Zooms are sharp, with natural-looking bokeh and round, out-of-focus highlights, and they cover VistaVision. Lenses, not diamonds—it is lenses that are forever, or at least a long time—provided you get the right one. Even…

In/Out, Up/Down—it seems like everything takes everything today, and spits it all out. It wasn’t always the case. Now you can just let the technology do all the work, and the thinking too, but that is where you can run into trouble. Monitors are great for taking a wide range of image formats and even converting them for output. However, monitors are for evaluating your images, not for making the…

This meant we had to do more takes of the scene. I made sure we had plenty of water bottles available for cast and crew. More care was given to the lead…
