Jaime is a recording engineer and producer with a guitar pedal addiction. Professionally, he has worked with the likes of Grammy-winning songwriter Steve Mostyn, along with a wide scope of New York-based and international talent. When not trying to replicate Star Trek references into his writing for B&H, he’s an avid reader, guitarist, and general tech enthusiast. His mom thinks he’s pretty cool, too.

One of the easiest ways to improve your production, be it podcast, radio, film, or music, is to take a look at the type of device into which you are recording your audio. Most pros know—and will tell you—not all audio is captured equally. Integrating a portable digital recorder into your rig may seem like an obvious solution, but it is often overlooked, and is an excellent way to improve your…

Walk into the typical professional recording studio, and chances are very likely you are going to see Avid’s Pro Tools running as the DAW of choice, even among increasingly stiff competition from other software and recording systems. The sound of a guitar can be described as the sum of its parts: its body wood, neck wood, fingerboard, pickups, finish, age, and—most importantly, the player—all play their roles. While the player (you) can be the wildcard in determining a guitar’s tone, knowing how common combinations of tone woods, body types, and pickups will sound goes a long way to helping you…

Though digital audio is far from a new technology, on the consumer front, there can be quite a bit to be desired when it comes to sonic quality. While above CD-quality files are becoming more and more readily available, many people still prefer the lower-quality lossy MP3 format for the convenience of its small file size. While the Hi-Fi and audiophile crowd continues to grow both in passion and…

Poor audio! While many tout the mantra that sound is half your film or broadcast, budgetary constraints can relegate sound to an afterthought—unfortunately, often to the peril of your project’s quality. While getting your sound captured correctly can be a daunting task, especially to the audio-uninitiated, you fortunately already have a powerful tool right in your pocket. No, not your wallet—your…

For many in video production or electronic news gathering (ENG), the most complicated part of their rig is the wireless audio system. Without a dedicated sound person, capturing audio that matches the quality of your shot can be a daunting task. However, not every wireless system requires a Bachelors degree in audio engineering and fluency in German to get you great results. Enter Audio-Technica…

The term “boutique” gets thrown around a lot in the microphone game, and seems to be readily applied to anything that is not mass produced in China (and more than a few that are). While it has become increasingly easy to get a good microphone without spending a small fortune, serious project and professional studios alike have proven there is still a need for truly great microphones, which…
