Ever since the first generation of Apogee’s Jam interfaces were introduced, in 2011, these USB interfaces have been extremely popular with musicians and songwriters in need of an ultra-portable interface that can quickly and easily record a guitar, bass, or other monophonic instrument with top-notch Apogee A to D conversion. The latest iteration of the interface, the Jam X, keeps the headphone jack and control

Recording a guitar amplifier is easy, but recording one well can be quite tricky. In addition to the guitar and the amp, the acoustics of your recording space play a big role, as do mic placement and the microphone itself. This article is intended to be a quick primer to point you in the right direction when buying a microphone to record your guitar amp. It is not intended to be an all-encompassing guide for amp recording technique, and believe you me, there is a lot to know on that subject. However, learning about the kinds of

From rock, to blues, to metal, the electric guitar has many faces. While there are many factors that go into guitar tone, the creative use of distortion to mold the sound of your instrument is undeniably one of the boldest tonal statements you can make as a guitarist. While the focus of this article is on classic distortion pedals, it’s important to note that the practice of distorting, or overdriving the sound of the electric guitar, predates the advent of the distortion pedal. Described by some as a “happy accident,” blues guitarists first

It’s NAMM 2018, and you know what that means—new wares from Yamaha! Other models have been added to the company roster, and we here at B&H are only too happy to stock them. Let’s start with the guitars, which we’ve featured in many of our product demonstrations. First, take a gander at the TransAcoustic models. These are acoustic/electric guitars that feature built-in reverb and chorus—reverb and chorus that you can hear live, in the room, without any external

Are you just getting into playing electric guitar? If so, thank you—it feels like there’s a dearth of us these days! But also, let’s address an issue you might be facing in purchasing your Instrument, best summed up by the following question: “What kind of electric guitar is right for me?” I know the answer my parents had for that question: “the cheapest,” but if you’re shelling out your own hard-earned dosh, deciding what kind of axe to purchase is a choice fraught with implications, both obvious and subliminal. You see, different electric

Ibanez’s Talman series guitars are quite distinctive in their look. Like the haircuts of our epoch, they are fashionably asymmetrical, though one suspects they’ll have more staying power than your standard hipster ’do—enough staying power for Ibanez to offer Talman series basses, as well as this Talman-series TCM50 acoustic guitar. With its figured ash top alongside its mahogany back and sides, this instrument offers balanced

A long time ago, a single manufacturer was perceived to be the undisputed leader in hollow-body electric guitars. That, however, was a long time ago. Now you regularly see some of the greatest jazz guitarists of our time playing Ibanez hollow-body guitars, and with its AF75 model—part of the Artcore Series—it’s not hard to see why. With its single-cutaway maple body, mahogany neck, and bound rosewood fingerboard, the AF75 series offers both an eminently playable experience and much in the way of tone. For electronics, these guitars feature a

In this video, Justin Colletti continues the discussion on recording guitar without the amplifier, this time eschewing software and focusing on the actual recording methods themselves. The process of “reamping”—as well as obtaining the classic, DI’ed tones used by the Beatles and Led Zeppelin to great effect—are a both covered. The Tech 21 Fly Rig 5 is a product you’ll see shown off here.

Fans of the progressive rock guitarist Jake Bowen can now more closely approximate his tone with his Signature Series guitar, courtesy of Ibanez. With DiMarzio pickups voiced specifically for the Jake Bowen series, you can achieve timbres perfect for ambient open chords, palm-muted chug-a-thons, or velvety, liquid lead-breaks. You know what else helps with tone? The 5-way pickup selector, wired to include a parallel-coil

Sometimes it’s all about the look, especially if you’re a guitar player just starting out on the instrument: you might want a guitar that looks like something Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton would play, but won’t break the bank; luckily for you, we carry the Cort G110 line of electric guitars, available in black, black satin, Caribbean green, and a

Has this ever happened to you? You’re mixing a rock record, one that needs to sound as huge as possible, but you run into a huge roadblock: there’s only one guitar track to work with—for the whole song. This has happened to me. Quite often, actually. See, in my mixing practice, I tend to work with acts who’ve recorded rather quickly and cheaply. They expect me, in post, to turn their one-take recording into a credible-sounding rock anthem. Here lies the rub: credible rock anthems typically don’t sport one solitary guitar track all the way
