Viltrox continues to deliver fast full-frame lenses that are both compact and ideal for budget-conscious shooters. The new Viltrox AF 50mm f/2 lens, available in Sony E or Nikon Z mount, delivers speed and autofocus while weighing in at less than half a pound. Its versatile 50mm focal length is ideal for everyday photography and videography, while a handy f/2 maximum aperture means nighttime and interior shooting shouldn’t be an issue.
The lens has an STM focusing motor that Viltrox promises is noiseless, accurate, and smooth. The interior of the lens has nine groups of thirteen optical structures, including extra-low dispersion (ED), high-refractive (HR), and aspherical (ASPH) lens elements that should help eliminate optical aberrations and distortions like flare and ghosting. Exif data transmission is supported, and the lens is only 2.7 x 2.3".
Fast full-frame lenses with autofocus didn’t used to exist at this price point, and it’s nice to see Viltrox build on their existing AF 40mm f/2.5 and AF 20mm f/2.8 lenses. The nine-bladed diaphragm on this new 50mm should get you nice circular bokeh, and its 20” minimum focusing distance isn’t bad for such wallet-friendly glass.
