Hot on the heels of last week’s announcement, Thypoch is back with a new lens: the Eureka 50mm f/2. This normal-length prime is an M-mount rangefinder lens and will be available in aluminum and brass finishes. Similar to the Simera lens, the Eureka features a classic design that will certainly appeal to those looking for a vintage aesthetic or at least those who appreciate the ergonomics and timeless design of a manual, mechanical lens.
Compared to the Simera, the Eureka 50mm has an even more traditional look with a collapsible design reminiscent of rangefinder lenses from the 1950s. Its compact profile measures just over an inch when retracted and extends to 1.6” long when in use. There’s an aperture ring near the front of the lens, which controls the 12-blade diaphragm, and both a knurled focus ring and focus tab for precise focusing control down to 3.3’.
The 50mm focal length is as classic as the look of the lens, offering a natural field of view that’s equally versatile for portraiture, street scenes, landscapes, and other everyday shooting needs. The f/2 maximum aperture contributes to the lens’ small size and also suits working in a variety of lighting conditions as well as for controlling depth of field. Thypoch also describes the lens as having a unique mixture of “contemporary coating technologies” and “retro optics.” The Eureka is shaping up to be character-rich lens with classic rendering along with a distinct flare and an overall smooth look.
