Four New Wide-Angle Cine Lenses Coming from Venus Optics

Wide-angle lenses have been a staple of Venus Optics for years, so it makes sense that the brand is quadrupling down with four fresh cine lenses that refine and expand the lineup. The new Laowa 9mm T5.8 VV Cine, 10mm T2.9 Zero-D VV Cine, 12mm T2.9 Lite Zero-D VV Cine, and 14mm T2.6 Zero-D VV Cine should be able to cover just about any wide angle shot you need on nearly any sized camera sensor. Venus Optics says the new 9mm is the widest rectilinear lens on the market that can cover VistaVision-sized sensors, though it will give you a bit of distortion. The 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm have no distortion, thus their “Zero-D” branding, and also cover full-frame and VistaVision sensors. All four lenses are light, compact, and have impressive close focus abilities.

The 9mm, 10mm, and 12mm all have a 46.31mm image circle, while the 14mm’s is 46.5mm. That’s sizeable enough to cover even large format cameras like theRED V-RAPTOR and ALEXA LF. The angle of view for the lenses is 134.8°, 130.3°, 122°, and 117.8° respectively, fantastic for shooting in tight spaces or capturing more of your surroundings. While the 9mm can achieve a stylized, slightly “fisheye” look, the zero-distortion image out of the rest of the lenses can cut in seamlessly with longer focal lengths and provide a more naturalistic feel. Close focus is 4.72” for the 9 and 10mm, 5.51” for the 12mm, and 7.87” for the 14mm.

Laowa lenses are known for being compact without sacrificing on image quality, and that should apply with these new wides. Expect low chromatic aberration, solid corner to corner sharpness, and weights ranging from 0.95 lb for the 9mm to around 1.35 lb for the 14mm. The 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm lenses have 77mm filter threads, and all four have an 80mm front diameter for use with a matte box. The lenses are available in a variety of mounts, including E, Z, RF, L, and PL (swapped out for LPL on the 10mm). The lenses come in a protective hard case that includes shims for any back focus adjustments.
