On this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we welcome two photographers who are part of the diverse and thriving cultural and artistic life of The Bronx. Rhynna Santos and Michael G. Young are both members of the Bronx Documentary Center and, today, we discuss their individual bodies of work, the role the BDC plays in their lives and community, and we talk a bit about what makes The Bronx so boogie-down.
Talk about committed—not only is

Is it necessary to be funny to create work with humor, what is the line between humor and discomfort, can art that is funny have a serious message? How does Instagram success translate to the real world? These are some of the questions we address in this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, and while “humor in art” is our starting point, the conversation takes its own life and we touch on a range of subjects, including the role of Instagram for artists, how to sustain a

Photography is one of the greatest gifts created; a unique visual language with the ability to speak to the larger world. As a photographer, having selected themes provides me with a sense of direction as I seek to make images. Some of the main themes that I focus on are friendship, love, family, children, dignity, struggle, protest and any other situation I deem provocative. When I encounter a

Photography is empathy visualized. Akin to how music cuts through analytical thought and into the soul of a person, photography makes us feel our shared humanity. Photography takes the sense of the universal and elevates it to the sublime through visceral, tangible visual formal elements such as shape, color, tone, texture, pattern, and composition. Photography is a visual meditation.

I'm not sure what photography is, I've never really owned a camera. My work is an attempt to see through the network.

Photography has a reputation for reflecting reality, but… it has very little to do with reality. As a photographer, I get to create my own reality. There is no such thing as an objective photo. As soon as I take a picture, I am being inherently subjective.
I literally get to crop out the parts I don't like. I choose which moments to freeze in time. I use shadow and light, composition and color, and

Most immediately, photography to me is a record of a moment that has been able to enter a physical realm; a construction, fiction, fabrication, or truth, it represents what was (seen or unseen). It's a memory of, and an elemental story. I need it as it is a lens with which I can create worlds. Upon closer examination, photography connects me to complexities and contradictions of a life largely removed from

Photography was an escape for me. I had a pretty poor and tough family life growing up—alcoholism, drug addiction, prison—that I had to get away from. Almost anyone can get a camera these days and, if you’re talented, you can get pretty far with just a camera... photography helped me get away.

Photography is a dimension, it’s a matrix in which time, space, and experience are encoded. It’s the method and the medium through which I engage with the world.

I'm going to be very strict in my response to this… a photograph is defined in two dimensions, static and isolated in time and space. A digital image is something different, something fluid that can do many different things. To call it a photograph is misleading, it launches us back into history when it should be sending us forward. Photography is an increasingly artisanal process.
