For wildlife and nature photographers looking for a compact camera with huge reach, Panasonic has just announced the Lumix FZ80D. An update to 2017’s Lumix FZ80, this new superzoom point-and-shoot features the same 18.1MP High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor as it predecessor, a Lumix DC Vario 60x zoom lens, and POWER O.I.S, while adding an improved viewfinder and rear LCD touchscreen. The new model also upgrades in-camera charging with a new USB-C port and included cable.
The main draw to this camera is the DC Vario 60x zoom lens, which covers an ultrawide to super telephoto 20-1200mm-equivalent zoom range, making it a favorite of both wildlife and landscape photographers. When shooting at longer focal lengths, POWER O.I.S. counteracts image blur resulting from camera shake and helps produce sharper overall images, meaning you’ll be able to get handheld shots even at the 1200mm-equivalent position.
For focusing, the camera uses Panasonic’s Depth-from-Defocus (DFD) AF, which is accurate and reliable, and includes the unique Post Focus feature that records imagery as a 4K MP4 file at 30 fps, shifting the specific point of focus throughout the burst and allowing users to select their preferred focal plane after the shot.

In terms of updates, the Lumix FZ80D has some minor, iterative updates that make the camera easier and more enjoyable to use. The electronic viewfinder, for example, received a resolution buff up to 2.36m-dot and an improved design, which should, according to Panasonic, facilitate clear, glare-free views, even in bright sunlight. Similarly, the fixed rear touchscreen LCD also sees a resolution boost up to 1.84m-dot—in both cases, the added resolution makes monitoring and reviewing images a decent bit clearer. The camera also adopts a more current USB-C port for easier in-camera battery charging.
