Canon Releases Firmware Upgrade with Portraiture Cropping Guides

High-volume photography work is a cornerstone of the professional photo ecosystem that rarely gets its time in the spotlight. Headshots for schools, teams, clubs, etc. is an area where enterprising photographers find huge growth opportunities. To assist in these assignments, Canon has announced a firmware upgrade for their EOS R7, EOS R10, and EOS R50 mirrorless cameras that adds four different in-camera cropping guides that cover typical high-volume portraiture framing.

Crop Guidelines

The first of the cropping guides gives top and bottom guidelines for standard adult-sized heads. The second uses the same concept, but it’s for smaller-sized heads, such as children and subjects that are further away. The third guide has three different head size framings displayed simultaneously. The fourth guide can be used for full or ¾ length portraits and has long left and right-side guidelines for positioning objects like balls or rackets. These four new cropping guides cover the majority of standard high-volume photography work.

The cropping guides can be shown on both the LCD and EVF of the cameras and will help photographers achieve the consistent framing and sizing needed when shooting large numbers of portraits that require minimal editing and quick delivery. New configurations of the three aforementioned cameras include the Cropping Guide Firmware pre-installed. Customers can also reach out to Canon Support to purchase the firmware individually and add it to existing cameras. This is the same method that Canon used for their custom Stop Motion Animation Firmware.

Custom firmware upgrades are a great way for brands like Canon to shape their products toward specific markets without overwhelming other customers with specialized features. Even experienced high-volume photographers rely on frame guides to achieve quality and consistency, so having them in camera can simplify a workflow and make for more efficient shoots.
