When Apple made the switch to their in-house silicon in November 2020, it revolutionized the Mac. The M1 family of chips delivered major improvements to both performance and power efficiency, turning the MacBook Pro into a true mobile powerhouse. With each iteration of Apple silicon, Apple has made significant improvements, such as transitioning from the already-impressive M1 5nm architecture to the industry-leading M3 3nm architecture.
While the M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro is still a very capable machine, it is currently almost three years into its lifespan. So why should you upgrade? The obvious answer is improved performance. Apple states that, compared to M1, M3’s performance and efficiency cores are up to 30 percent and 50 percent faster, respectively. The improved Neural Engine in the M3 is also up to 60 percent faster, providing performance boosts for creative apps.
Another feature introduced with M3 Pro/Max is Dynamic Caching which uses only the exact amount of memory required for each task. This increases the average utilization of the GPU, resulting in improved performance for graphics-intensive apps and even games.
The M3 Pro/Max also add hardware-accelerated ray tracing and mesh shading to the Mac for the first time. Ray tracing displays the properties of light in realistic, accurate images. Creative apps can deliver up to 2.5x the speed of the M1 family of chips, thanks to the new graphics architecture. Hardware-accelerated mesh shading delivers improved geometry processing, providing visually complex scenes in both games and graphics-intensive apps. This improved GPU architecture enables all these enhancements and features while still maintaining Apple silicon’s impressive power efficiency. In fact, the M3 GPU can deliver the same performance as M1 using nearly half the power or deliver up to 65 percent more at peak performance.
While a M1 Pro/Max MacBook Pro can certainly still handle everyday tasks and light creative work, upgrading to a M3 Pro/Max MacBook Pro will ensure you get the latest improvements and features. Content creators, who need to handle time-sensitive workflows, will appreciate the new additions and faster performance. If you’re looking for the optimal Mac experience, the M3 Pro/Max MacBook Pro may be right for you.
