Sony Announces the High-Resolution ILX-LR1 Camera for Industrial Drone Use

Professional drone users can now add a new, ultralight, high-resolution camera to their toolkit―the Sony ILX-LR1. Boasting a 61MP Exmor R CMOS sensor, the full-frame ILX-LR1 is ideal for capturing highly detailed stills and UHD 4K video for a multitude of aerial industrial applications.

Ultralightweight Design

Significantly lighter than Sony’s alpha series cameras, the ILX-LR1 weighs only 8.6 ounces without a lens, enabling you to extend your drone’s flight times. By forgoing components like an LCD monitor, handgrip, and viewfinder, it can take a more streamlined form, measuring less than 4 x 3 x 2", that is compatible with smaller drones.

High-Resolution Sensor

The ILX-LR1 is built around a back-illuminated, full-frame Sony Exmor R CMOS image sensor that creates images with extraordinary levels of sensitivity, resolution, and dynamic range. A wide 100-32,000 ISO range enables you to use the ILX-LR1 in most daylight settings.

Applications

The ILX-LR1’s high-resolution, wide dynamic range, and low noise enables it to reveal fine details in structures, letting you see small scratches and cracks when used for surveying, inspecting, and mapping. Drone mapping is made easy with a timesaving, 3-frames-per-second continuous capture rate for high-altitude use.

Remote Photo and Video Capture

Support for Sony’s Camera Remote SDK enables users to integrate an API into the camera system for remote shutter and settings control, live viewing, and more. Users can also link image IDs with drone position data in post-production. The ILX-LR1’s Power and Control terminal uses low-latency data control for instant triggering and other remote applications. Power, exposure, focus, and trigger functions can be sent via a single terminal that is equipped with a lock function to prevent unintended adjustments. Controls and additional interfaces like the micro-HDMI and locking USB-C ports are grouped in one area to maximize the camera’s mounting options.

E-Mount Lenses

Choose from a wide array of Sony E-mount lenses up to medium telephoto length to best suit your shot. Thanks to its large 61MP sensor, a single shot from the ILX-LR1 can be used in place of several lower-resolution images.
