Blackmagic Design Announces Full-Frame Cinema Camera, Advanced Panels and More at IBC

In the leadup to IBC 2023, Blackmagic Design hosted a major livestream during which it announced a list of new products—including the full-frame Cinema Camera 6K, with the same form factor as the Pocket series. Also announced are larger versions of the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel with 20 and 30 buttons, a large Videohub 80x80 12G, upgraded Micro Studio Camera 4K G2, and a Studio Camera 4K Plus G2.

Digital cinematography will be breaking through new boundaries with the Cinema Camera 6K. The high-end digital camera is equipped with a full-frame 6K sensor that offers a native resolution of 6048 x 4032 and wide dynamic range.

The camera captures vibrant, colorful images with very natural skin tones and boasts a custom-designed low-pass filter to match its sensor. The advanced L-mount design provides added flexibility with new and vintage lenses, and the camera employs fast CFexpress media for recording, delivering reliable content acquisition for cloud and mobile work, with the bonus of recording Blackmagic RAW and H.264 proxies simultaneously. The 13 stops of dynamic range and dual native ISO of up to 26,600 make it possible to capture stunning images in all lighting conditions. The elegantly designed Cinema Camera 6K is made of a lightweight carbon fiber polycarbonate composite that makes it light and eminently portable, and it can be easily rotated for capturing images in vertical aspect ratios, such as 9:16 and 4:5, for delivering content ready for TikTok and YouTube Shorts.

Also announced, the Studio Camera 4K Plus G2 offers pro studio camera features in a smaller package. It has an active four-thirds lens mount, which is compatible with a wide variety of affordable photographic lenses and a nifty 7" LCD capacitive touchscreen that allows operators to access desired settings quickly and frame shots with ease. Onscreen overlays make it possible for the operator to keep track of status and record parameters, as well as support functions such as histogram, focus peaking, frame guides, and more.

To provide you with a better sense of what your final image will look like, you can apply 3D LUTs and load and customize presets that can be used on future projects. The camera sports a 12G-SDI input/out and an HDMI output. It captures resolutions up to UHD 4K60 and features built-in Resolve color correction. Camera control is achieved via HDMI, SDI, USB, or Ethernet.

Most of the attributes of the Studio Camera 4K Plus are also shared by the Micro Studio Camera 4K G2 , except for a few features, such as Ethernet control, and of course, the large LCD monitor. This smaller entry in the Blackmagic Design Studio series features a Canon LP-E6 battery slot for powering for portability, but it also has a 12 VDC barrel connector for powering the camera in a studio or for extended shooting times. The Micro and its larger counterpart have built-in stereo microphones.

I would remind people that this is BMD's FIRST full frame camera and is more than likely going to be the entry model for the line. Remember the pocket line, first we got the 4k, then the 6k, then the 6k pro. Expect to see a similar approach with the full frame line. This 6k is the P4K of this new generation. There will be either a full frame 6k Pro or Full Frame Cinema 8K sometime between mid February and NAB 2024. I expect this will then be followed up by a 8k Pro in later summer 2024, all will be under $4000. I also think we're likely to see a full frame Ursa replacement for the 4.6k G2 around NAB time next year too.

Wow, what a let down. I've been waiting for Blackmagic to make a full-frame camera, even preordered this as soon as I saw the announcement only to cancel upon finding out that it doesn't have internal ND's. Seriously? Absolute misstep, guess the 6K Pro will stay as my B-Cam until the FF URSA or inevitable "Pro" version of this comes out where the only thing different is internal ND...

I believe it was because of the design style's compatibility with the switch to the L Mount system.

It's not a very good excuse for them to use considering Sony has an entire cinema lineup with E-mount which is a whole 2mm closer flange distance to the sensor, and they've had no problem fitting internal ND in there.

Only in Sony’s larger cameras do they have internal ND. Not in cameras at this size and price point.

Yet the 6K Pro was this size and price point and had internal ND's, I'm more talking about possibility and industry expectations rather than how it compares directly. Two steps forward, one step back.

Holy crap. People really do find a place to complain about SOMETHING.

Sorry it's a let down to you? Move on. Your life will not be in shambles because your dream camera does not have internal ND's...
