Hands-On Review: Insta360 Link 2 Webcam

There are multiple ways to present a topic to an audience. From the typical multi-slide presentation to lecturing a room of online viewers, the standards have barely changed. Insta360 wants to challenge the status quo with their intuitive new Link 2 4K AI Webcam. How can this device immerse viewers in your work? How does it operate and how does it best suit your creative workload? Let’s take a look.

The Link 2 sports a unique design that accommodates multiple types of video capture. The bottom half features a swivel that spins the camera around in a 360-degree rotation and a powerful magnet that attaches itself to the included clip base. An arm rises out of the top swivel part and leads to the main camera housing. In terms of aesthetics, the Link 2 sports a sleek black finish, giving it a strong sense of style that definitely helps it stand out among more conventional-looking webcams.

Delivering 4K resolution at 30 frames per second, the camera easily captured my presence as well as my environment thanks to the 79.5-degree diagonal field of view and a ½” CMOS sensor. I didn’t love the limit of 30 fps at 4K resolution, but for pre-recorded material like offline presentations and general content creation, it’s fine.

When it comes to live streaming, you can keep the 4K30 performance or swap over to 1080p resolution with up to a 60 fps for additional fluidity at the cost of resolution; although when it comes to live streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube, resolution is limited, so this does perform extremely well under those circumstances. Also, to enable 1080p at 60 fps, you must make manual adjustments in programs like OBS as Insta360’s application didn’t provide me with that option.

The Link 2 also includes several features that aren’t necessarily standard for all webcams—e.g., an integrated ¼”-20 threaded mount, auto focus, and HDR functionality. These are definitely welcome additions that you won’t find on conventional webcams.

There are also various filters, background blur effects, and a multitude of additional features that could be useful for a handful of users. All of this is controlled by a dedicated Insta360 application that is available for free. There is a mobile app that also gives you additional control options such as frame adjustments, gimbal positioning, and more. You can also position the camera body downward to shut it off, which is great if you have privacy concerns.

AI tracking is really the standout feature of the Link 2. Capturing my face and then turning to follow me as I walked across the room felt revolutionary. Attaching the Link 2 to a tripod gave me the opportunity to maneuver around a room while filming. I cannot overstate how important it was for me to gain this level of freedom. The integrated microphone picked up on my voice patterns clearly as I walked around, which is another great feature. Both the tracking and microphone are backed by integrated AI, which plays into a couple of neat features.

While tracking and framing are great, I really found the Link 2’s gesture control intriguing. Using my hand to control the zoom levels was a nice addition and paramount to the presentation experience. Live streamers can benefit from it as well as editors who know exactly when to start and end a cut. The only downside is that you must be in a well-lit room to utilize the hand gesture control. Alternatively, there is an app that gives greater control over the Link 2, allowing you to get that ideal shot without constantly going back to your device.

Another neat feature is the whiteboard functionality. Using included markers, you can use your hands to tell the Link 2 to focus on your whiteboard, ideal for presenting notes, diagrams, and more. There is also a top-down mode where the Link 2 can view and project documents and activities that you’re performing on your desktop, but it doesn’t quite work out the way I was expecting it to.

Overall, I was surprised by the Link 2. It plays well with my most used programs from OBS to Teams and even Discord. I rarely had to manually adjust the camera angle, and when I did the Link 2 took appropriate action to recalibrate itself to me. I think content creators and presenters can easily take advantage of the features Insta360 built into this unique webcam.
