Top New Cinema Cameras of 2024

2024 was a big year for video, as professional-level tools continued to become more accessible for aspiring filmmakers and creatives. Cinema cameras that cost less than ten grand can now compete with those that go for six figures. This opening up of the camera ecosystem means consumers have an increased power and ability to pick and choose exactly which features matter most to them. Once you decide what kind of projects you want to be shooting, you can assess the pros and cons of the cameras on the market and see which align with your vision. We’re here to help, breaking down seven of our favorite new cinema cameras of the year and telling you a bit about what makes them so special.

Canon EOS C400

The Canon EOS C400 6K Full-Frame Digital Cinema Camera is at the top of our list, as it proves a worthy new addition to Canon’s storied line of EOS cinema cameras. The 6K full frame back-illuminated CMOS sensor can pump out some truly stunning imagery, the variety of raw and uncompressed codecs is unparalleled, and the triple base ISOs of 800, 3200, and 12,800 can cover you for just about any shooting situation you might encounter. There are so many reasons to love this camera – consider the upgraded Dual-Pixel Autofocus II, the high-quality internal ND filters, and the wide array of inputs and outputs, and you’re still just scratching the surface. The key to the C400 is its versatility, throw it into any scripted or unscripted production, with cinema lenses or photo lenses, and prepare to be impressed.

Canon EOS C80

The Canon EOS C80 6K Full-Frame Cinema Camera takes a bunch of the most exciting features from the C400, porting them into a more compact package by stripping away anything that might not be needed for solo shooters and smaller crews. You’re left with the fantastic sensor, autofocus, and triple base ISOs, as well as a 12G-SDI output and an upgraded LCD that fix the two most common gripes with its predecessor, the C70. You’ll lose out on certain flavors of raw, as well as more advanced interfaces like Genlock and Hirose lens control, but the fantastic imagery remains the same. The smaller size and weight also mean the C80 can easily be thrown on gimbals, drones, sliders, and other tools that can help make it the Swiss Army Knife of documentary and unscripted production.

Blackmagic Design PYXIS

One of the most unique entries on this list, the Blackmagic Design PYXIS 6K Cinema Box Camera should make waves with its box camera form factor, full frame 6K sensor, Blackmagic RAW recording capabilities, and wallet-friendly price tag. Blackmagic has taken the popular imaging abilities and sensor of their Cinema Camera 6K and ported them into a new package that vastly expands rigging options and customizability. Quality of life features like H.265 proxy recording, direct streaming, and dual native ISO ensure the PYXIS can be a powerful B or C cam for larger productions, or a remarkably accomplished A cam for solo operators and small crew shoots. Add on a few accessories like the first party PYXIS Monitor, and suddenly you have a fully featured cine rig.

Sony Burano

The Sony BURANO 8K Digital Motion Picture Camera made waves this year by bringing some fresh new features to the cinema world. Never before has a camera been able to use in-body image stabilization (IBIS) with PL-mount lenses. That alone could be a game changer for cinematographers, but the BURANO goes further by bringing in some of the best features from Sony’s FX line, Alpha cameras, and venerated CineAlta VENICE 2. Expect unparalleled raw image capture with the X-OCN codec, alongside dual base ISOs, an electronically variable ND filter, best-in-class autofocus, a locking E-mount hidden under the PL-mount, and a flexible stable of recording formats and frame rates. All that in a body that weighs only 5.3 lb? This is a true jack-of-all-trades camera.

RED V-RAPTOR [X]

If only the best of the best will do, the RED DIGITAL CINEMA V-RAPTOR [X] 8K VV Camera might be your ticket to cinema success. The real star of the show here is a VistaVision-sized global shutter sensor that can capture beautiful 8K footage the flexible REDCODE RAW format. This is also the first camera with RED’s new Global Vision technology, allowing for tools like Extended Highlights that can further boost the camera’s already massive amount of dynamic range. Though the body clocks in at just over 4 lb, RED also managed to pack in two independent 12G-SDI outputs, a single CFexpress Type B card slot, advanced autofocus, and a strong selection of streaming and virtual production capabilities. The V-Raptor X combines headline grabbing stats like 8K 120p recording with a durable design and all the professional level interfaces you could ask for.

DJI Ronin 4D 8K

The DJI Ronin 4D 4-Axis Cinema Camera 8K Combo Kit with DL PZ 17-28mm T3.0 ASPH Lens isn’t your universally compatible camera, but rather a one-of-a-kind beast with four-axis stabilization built into the body. That means you get all the benefits of a gimbal, plus an extra axis of stabilization to remove those pesky up and down movements from a walking operator. That feature alone made the Ronin 4D 6K a hit with shooters who wanted silky smooth action, but now the 8K version steps it up a notch with the Zenmuse X9-8K sensor that bumps up the resolution and dynamic range. Throw in the 17-28mm lens and suddenly you can capture 8K 60p video in tricky situations like moving vehicles, chaotic sports games, thrilling action scenes, and more. This camera has tons of tricks up its sleeve – dual native ISO, LiDAR focus control, a built-in SSD, and more – so I highly recommend giving it a look if buttery smooth footage is a top priority.

Kodak Super 8

Our final camera on the list is certainly not for your next cookie cutter corporate shoot, but in the right hands it can unlock a ton of exciting creative possibilities. The Kodak Super 8 Camera is the first Super 8 camera for the 21st century, packing in tons of new features while maintaining the classic nostalgic look the format is known for. Flexibility is key here, with frame rates that go from 18 to 36 and a modern flip-out LCD screen that can give you up to date information on stats like exposure and remaining film, as well as dial in all your settings. The camera comes with a 6mm lens that has a 35mm equivalent FOV in 35mm and it supports a variety of other C-mount lenses. You can even record synced external audio to an SD card, get video out via the micro-HDMI, and swap between a wide number of stocks to further customize your look. Remember, Super 8 cartridges only run for about three minutes, but for projects that demand a hazier, lo-fi feel, the Kodak Super 8 should prove a lot more reliable than trying to fix up a half-century old camera from eBay.

No Nikons? IMO, the Z9 blows away the Canons and Blackmagic cameras in both features and quality

The C400 and C80 would make a great A + B camera combo. They are priced well and offer compelling mix of freatures in their price points. The Pyxis has been popular since day one, with better-than-usual build quality for Blackmagic and a decent (albeit limited) feature set.

I'm baffled by the inclusion of the Kodak Super 8 camera in this list. Shooting on film will make some shooters salivate, but it seems somewhat crippled with it's limited features. Looks like a halo product at best.
