The astronomical phenomena of a planet moving into opposition isn’t unique—but what is unique is when three planets are in opposition in quick succession. This spring, the three bright outer planets—Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars—will be at opposition during a span of just 79 days.

Jupiter’s opposition occurred first, on May 8, in the constellation Libra. Next was Saturn’s opposition, which occurred on June 27, just above the Teapot stars of Sagittarius. Finally, the opposition of

Infrared sensor technology has come a long way in the last ten years. Once used primarily by law enforcement, the military, and hunters, the low cost surrounding recent advancements in the field of infrared means that consumer-level thermal scopes and imagers are now becoming more readily available. The FLIR Lepton, for instance, is a radiometric-capable LWIR camera that is smaller than a dime, fits inside a smartphone, and costs one tenth the price of

Aputure continues to expand its Light Storm series of high CRI (95+) LED lights, news which is sure to please gaffers or lighting geeks looking for a new toy to play with. These fixtures feature a Chip on Board (COB) design, where several LED chips are bonded directly to a substrate to form a single module. Since the LEDs are packed closely together, they give the illusion of a seamless lighting panel when turned on, and lumen output per inch is also greatly increased for the same reason.
On the small end of the lineup we have the

A 12x binocular is powerful enough to reveal the details of far-off subjects—as long as you're not holding it in your hands. At that magnification, the shaking of even the steadiest observer will badly disrupt the viewing experience. If you're on a boat or in a moving vehicle, the problem is even worse. But the 12x28 Techno-Stabi Image-Stabilized Binocular from Fujinon frees you from the tyranny of the tripod. Its

Ideal for space-conscious image-makers who want performance and light weight, Angler has produced two softboxes with a clever design, made expressly for small LED lights. Their reflective silver interior maximizes the light source’s output, increasing its range, and making longer throw work possible. Intended for 12 x 12"

At the turn of the 20th Century, the only people who wore lamps on their heads were miners. Those early headlamps burned acetylene gas, until Thomas Edison invented an electric model, in 1914. Miners still wear headlamps today, as do dentists, doctors, electricians, plumbers, and many other professionals. The technology has evolved from gas flame to incandescent bulb to LED, but the principle is the same: you just can’t beat hands-free, portable light.
Of course, headlamps aren’t just for digging coal and drilling teeth. They’re perfect for a

It feels good to know you’re going the right way—especially if it doesn’t involve unfolding and re-folding a map or, heaven forbid, asking for directions. Auto makers and tech companies have catered for decades to our desire for accurate, hassle-free navigation aids, and today it’s hard to imagine a smartphone or recent-model car that doesn’t offer turn-by-turn GPS.
But modern stand-alone GPS units offer much more than maps and directions, and they’re not just for use in motor vehicles. GPS bicycle computers let you take part in virtual races
