Shure has unveiled a welcome update to their MV88 phone-mounted stereo microphone, now with a USB-C connection. This update brings the MV88 back into the fray after Apple’s transition to USB-C ports, while extending its compatibility; the new Shure MV88 can connect to iOS and Android devices, as well as any Windows or Mac machine.
The MV88 is an adjustable and positionable stereo microphone able to capture pro audio whether you’re taking a selfie video or capturing the scene around you, offering a huge step up from your device’s built-in mic. The MV88 is pure plug-and-play, working as soon as you plug it into your device. When used with Shure MOTIV apps (available for desktop and mobile), you can take advantage of auto leveling and real-time denoising modes, EQ and dynamics processing, and four selectable polar patterns: adjustable stereo (60 to 150 degrees), mono cardioid, mono bidirectional, and raw mid-side.
The Shure MV88’s form factor seems to best be suited for vlogging and street interviews where using a lavalier might be too cumbersome, but it looks to be a powerful field recorder as well with its stereo capability. If you’re looking for a powerful and easy-to-use phone-mounted microphone, the updated MV88 might be a good fit.
