Choosing a microphone is difficult, even on a good day. With so many options, and so many subtle differences in design, it takes a great deal of patience and a discerning ear to find the right mic for your application. That’s why B&H has decided to reduce the burden on the customer and present a new way of testing mics before you buy: Enter the B&H Virtual Mic Locker.
Based on a select list of B&H’s top broadcast microphones, the B&H Virtual Mic Locker is an online tool that helps you determine the sonic differences between popular microphones for podcasting and voice-over work. Using Soundcloud links embedded into each included mic listing, you can demo the microphone’s character on a range of vocal sounds, including sopranos, altos, tenors, and baritones, as well as with different onboard settings activated that may be unique to the individual mic—listen to how each microphone handles the harsh consonants, like 's', 't', and 'b' with a pop filter.
Each microphone was recorded at Edge Studio, in New York City, using a Grace Design M103 preamp connected to a Presonus Quantum 2626 interface. This was done to maintain consistency across models and to ensure the purest, most accurate representation of each mic’s sonic characteristics. Here are some popular mic comparisons we've put together:
