So, you just bought your first DSLR camera and you are interested in joining the ranks of image-makers everywhere who find pleasure and creativity in documenting the world as they see it. What are you gonna do now? Do you know how to set your aperture? Or what ISO is? Did you know that DSLR stands for Digital Single Lens Reflex? It doesn’t matter: what you do know is that you’re ready to step up from your point-and-shoot camera and create images over which you have more control.
A digital SLR camera is a great machine that allows you to

A flash bracket is a straightforward device that enables you to produce flattering light, compared to the brilliant head-on blast that comes with simply mounting a flash atop a camera. At its most basic premise, a flash bracket attaches to your camera and allows you to position an electronic flash unit, or even a small continuous light source, at a greater distance from the lens's optical axis than a built-in or shoe-mounted flash. This results in lighting that is inherently more attractive, natural looking, and less harsh, yet still retains

This year, I have had the good fortune to try some incredible lenses on my Nikon full-frame DSLR—lenses from Zeiss and Schneider for example, but when asked to formulate a list of my photo gear picks, all I could picture was a tennis-ball canister filled with three Nikon prime “D” lenses. Why admit to such a ridiculous image? Dreaming of summer maybe, but… why not? Close in size to a tennis ball, the three lenses offer a virtually identical form factor, each with a 52mm filter diameter, and would fit quite nicely in that can. With a little

Thinking of venturing into the ultra-wide-angle domain? Well, look no further than Canon’s latest offering, the EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens, which brings image stabilization to the game in addition to improved optics. Ideal for landscape and architectural photography as well as video, this lens will increase your photographic options, and not just because it has a wide field of view from 108° 10' to 63° on full-frame cameras. Also, for style

If you use a speed light on your camera, chances are that at some point you will move that flash off your camera and, when you do, a whole new world opens up before your eyes. You’ll start to have dreams of umbrellas, softboxes, reflectors, light stands, beauty dishes, and other light modifiers that can turn a boring snapshot of a person into a well-lit portrait. And when you do move that flash off camera (and you will), you’ll need some way to trigger it.

With all of the technical considerations that go into choosing a digital camera, it's easy to forget the strap. You get one with your camera, but it looks like an afterthought—a functional necessity with no style. If it were a fashion statement, it would be the equivalent of wearing black knee socks with a cocktail dress—functional, but less than attractive.
You can easily improve this situation by picking up a higher-quality strap that's more comfortable, functional—and better looking. Plus, you don't have to break the bank. There are

You’ve probably heard the astounding Instagram numbers before: 200+ million monthly active users, 58 million images uploaded per day, 1.7 billion likes per day! With such an oversaturated platform, how can you possibly stand out? Well the truth is that there are probably as many ways to stand out as there are photos uploaded each day, but here we’re going to concentrate on just one: your camera.
Before I upset people I want to stress that I don’t think a DSLR is going to give you better photos than a smartphone will for your social media

From the incredible capabilities of new sensors and processors to 4K video to light field imaging, I am understandably impressed and often mystified by the leaps made in digital camera technology. However, when a wonderfully uncomplicated product comes along, it is also worth a shout out. The Lens Flipper by GoWing is a dual-sided lens mount that hangs from a sturdy shoulder strap and serves as a convenient carrier for two lenses and, more so, a simple way to swap out

A camera is only as good as the eye that sees behind it, and the eye is just an extension of a photographer’s point of view. In this article, we highlight four photographers with very different points of view: a mountain landscape photographer who hangs on the edges of cliffs at the Everest Base Camp; a globetrotting dance photographer; an editorial photographer who captures the quiet interiors of homes; and an attorney who doubles as a sports photographer.
The challenges they face in the field require different sets of lenses to

With much of photography’s attention being devoted to the sole creation of the image, and more recently the virtual and instant sharing of those images, the art and practice of physically producing prints is becoming less of a requirement than in the past. This scarcity of physical prints does have immense benefits, though, as it is still the best and most revered method of owning a photograph. Printing photographs also grounds your work and allows for a bit more separation from the image itself, since it is being turned into a tangible object
