Dynamic Range is the difference between the brightest part of the scene and the darkest part. Our eyes can see 11 stops of difference between bright light and darkness; a camera can only see five stops. So what we see with our eyes we cannot always capture with a camera. Think of a scene shot from indoors with a window in the background. Invariably, either the window’s light looks nice while the interior is too dark to be seen or if the interior is exposed properly, the light from the window is a washed-out blob of white. The capabilities of

Make no mistake: the Nikon COOLPIX P900 is a photo-taking telescope that you hold in your hand. The superzoom point-and-shoot camera has been around for years, albeit under the radar, as the point-and-shoot market has been waged in a war against two competing genres of cameras. On one end: the smartphone camera. On the other: the entry-level DSLR camera with its lower and lower price point. If the point-and-shoot is going to survive this war, it is the superzoom camera that will save it. Put simply, there is no smartphone or DSLR on the

Niche though it may be, virtual reality has never been so accessible.

Before there was autofocus, there was focus. The camera is a light-tight box that is used to expose a photosensitive surface (film or digital sensor) to light. In order to focus the light onto the surface, most cameras (and your own eyes) use a lens to direct the light. Why did I say, “Most?” Well, there are many types of cameras around that do not rely on lenses to focus light. The “pinhole camera” is a box with a tiny hole on one end and a photosensitive surface on the other. Light comes through the tiny opening and is projected onto

When an industry leader like Sekonic, with more than 85 meters under its belt and a winning streak reaching back to 1951 presents a new “color meter” at Photokina just after the company’s 64th birthday, the photographic world takes notice. This, of course, is the company that put the tiny, ubiquitous L-308 in everyone’s pocket, sent the L-518 Digipro X-1 into space and presented the L-758 DigitalMaster as a hardware/software “Exposure Profiling” solution. So

Today’s scuba divers want to bring images home to show their families and friends the beauty of the underwater world. Simple cameras bring back acceptable snapshots, but to capture the splendor of the underwater environment, you need a camera with manual exposure control, a wide-angle lens with macro capabilities, and a large sensor for better image quality.
The underwater image-maker could choose a DSLR or mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses, but these systems tend to be expensive and heavy, which translates into extra hassle when
