Camden Thrasher, based in the US Pacific Northwest, is a self-taught photographer with a passion for motorsports and an eye for dramatic lighting that he uses to illuminate his images of racecars and racecar drivers very effectively. He recently shared some of his insights with B&H Photo.
How did you get started in motorsports and photography?
First off, I guess I would say that since early childhood I’ve been fascinated by cars and motorsports, specifically endurance sportscar racing. The urge to photograph this sport came later, but I

La Jolla, California, is the best place on the planet to photograph the spectacular Pacific race of Brown Pelican, along with a nice variety of other birds that frequent coastal California. In winter, the pelicans and several other species like Brandt’s and Double-crested Cormorants, are molting into their handsome breeding plumages. The pelicans sport their fire-engine-red bill pouches. Most days are clear and sunny. Making images of the pelicans with deep Pacific-blue backgrounds is a snap. On sunny days, I point my shadow right at my avian

Dear Father-in-Law: At one point during all of our vacations and at every big family event, you ask me the same question, “How come my photos look awful, and yours look so good?”
While there’s never been an easy way to explain it to you at those moments (and I do love seeing you put your eye up to the LCD monitor to compose) I have always felt that your frustrations don’t lie with your camera, nor in any inherent ability of mine; but with just a few simple mechanical, physical, and emotional recalculations, your photos will improve from

The ultimate in resolution for full-frame DSLRs: this is what Canon’s latest 50-megapixel 5DS and 5DS R offer users. These cameras take a huge leap forward in resolution for the legendary 5D series and, when one looks at the files, they are impressively sharp and detailed. I was also able to observe the main differences between the two models and zoom almost endlessly into those images. It was a fun experience, and anyone looking for maximum resolution and detail will not have to search for much longer.
