Have you ever wondered what is going on inside that picture-taking box that you just held up to your eye, or out at arm’s length, to capture a photograph?
The Basics
The camera is, in its most simplified terms, a box that allows light to enter and strike a light-sensitive surface. This surface is either a frame of film or a digital sensor. Cameras can accomplish this task in the most simple way—a pinhole camera, for instance. Pinhole cameras may have only

Before talking about a number of tools, tables, and accessories that will improve your tethered photography, let’s just be clear about what we mean by “tethered” photography. The wide-to-portrait focal length lends itself to exceptional versatility for everyday shooting. Because of this, if you want your lens to compete, you have to pull out the stops to make it

In Part I we talked, in a fair amount of detail, about what DOF is and how it is determined. If you are happy with what you learned in Part I and do not feel the need to know the math behind all of the different factors in DOF, then you are free to go out and start confidently manipulating DOF while taking photos. However, if you are having difficulty pressing the

Depth of field (DOF) is defined as the area in a projected image, forward and aft of the focal plane, which also appears to be in focus in the image. When you pass light through a lens and focus that light to form an image on a piece of film, digital sensor, projection screen, etc., the area of the image that is in true focus is razor thin—the focal plane. Everything else is out of focus, to some degree. However, because of the subtlety of the out-of focus regions, we do not notice the softness of the image until, as objects are located

Crop factor does NOT affect a lens’s focal length.
Crop factor does NOT affect a lens’s aperture.
