Top Camera Backpacks of the Year

Choosing the best camera backpack is no easy task. Not only are there countless bag options to choose from, but because every photographer is different and has different needs and a different budget, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. To help make the selection process a little easier, we've put together a list of some of our favorite camera backpacks with reasons why we like them so much.

1. Shimoda Designs Urban Explore Backpack (Anthracite, 30L)

The Urban Explore backpack is comfortable, durable, and makes for a great choice as an everyday bag thanks to its relatively subtle design. Space-wise you can snag this back in 20L, 25L, and 30L capacities depending on your gear setup. Regardless of which version you go with, the Urban Explore features a removable camera insert to help keep your stuff organized. For reference the 30L bag holds about 2 cameras and 6 lenses. Has shoulder strap adjustments that no other bag in this size would. The Urban Explore comes in Anthracite and Boa color options.

2. WANDRD PRVKE V3

We're  huge fans of WANDRD's bags here at B&H and the latest version of their backpack, the PRVKE V3, is a great choice for to haul your camera gear or even as an everyday bag. It features a removable camera cube which is great if you just want to use it as a regular bag or swap to a bigger insert for more gear. This sleek bag comes in multiple colors and it's available in 21L, 31L, and 41L sizes. If you're a photographer we recommend the Photo Bundle which pairs the PRVKE pack with their Essential+ Camera Cube alongside some accessory straps.

3. Peak Design Everyday Backpack

Peak Design's Everyday Backpack really needs no introduction. Even if you don't know what it is, you've almost certainly seen one but for those who don't know, it's a "stylish" almost pod-like bag that's made with weatherproof material so your gear will always be protected. The outer construction is pretty rigid so your gear always feels protected, and the interior has three dividers that can be moved and foldout as well for a surprising amount of customizability. It comes in 20L and 30L capacities and bunch of other colors too. One of the things we love the most about Peak Design's gear is how nicely they synergize with each other so if you're already bought into their ecosystem, it's a fantastic bag to haul your gear around.

The N-PVD backpack from Nanuk is perfect for those who need to lug around a ton of gear. It's got a weatherproof exterior with waterproof zippers and super flexible dividers so you can really make use of all the extra space this bag offers. This bag comes in 18L, 30L, and 35L capacities and it's compatible with Nanuk's Cubik inserts, which come in a ton of different sizes, allowing you to find the perfect combination for your setup.

5. Lowepro Backpacks

Lowepro has been in the bag game for quite some time with a ton of different bags options, so we thought we'd highlight a few here. The Flipside 300 AW III looks like a traditional backpack but now features side access to make it easier than ever to reach your camera quickly. It's made from a wear-resistant FormShell nylon with reinforced bumpers that keep your stuff secure in the event it hits the floor a little too quickly for example.

The ProTactic BP 450 AW II has four access points (both sides, top, and back). Like the Peak Design, it has a hard-shell construction, so gear is protected from impact. Its standout feature is the inclusion of multiple SlipLock loops that can be used to add pouches and cases to it. Another nice add-on is the inclusion of a removable waist belt that can be used as a stand-alone utility belt.

Finally the Lowepro Fastpack BP 250 AW III has a neat split design with two main compartments, allowing you to use one for gear and one for personal items for example. The camera compartment can be accessed quickly without opening up the whole compart

6. Nomatic McKinnon Camera Backpack

Nomatic's McKinnon is yet another hard-shell backpack but this one's standout feature is an adjustable ladder system that allows you to expand the top area of the bag and customize it depending on your needs. For example, if you need want to carry more camera gear you can expand that compartment or fold it if you just want to use the bag as a regular backpack. This backpack also has top access to reach your gear or personal items quickly and full back access too. It's also available in various bundles with Nomatic's own cube system which come in both small or large versions.

I have the Sunny 16 weather proof bag, I love it. Took it to Alaska with me and handled my 2 Canon cameras and accessories very well. Wasn't even mentioned in this article.

The Peak Design Everyday backpack's zippers and the seams around the zippers are not weather-resistant, not even against a light rain.  When I mentioned this in a review on their website, they deleted my review.

The best backpack I own is an Artisan & Artist RR4-06C, currently offered by B&H at a steal of a price.

I don’t know if what I want already exists in a ready-made form, up to now I had to adapt a large backpack with wheels, as I need it not to break my back during city trips, while being still able to use it as a backpack when walking in the nature… and airplane compatible please, while I don’t care too much for padding

I've tried most backpacks on the market and would recommend the fabulous NYA-EVO line for any adventure or sporting outing!  The Fjord 35 and Fjord 60C models are made with premium materials and great design thought.  The Removable Camera Insert (RCI) system allows for limitless flexibility.  Kudos to B&H for carrying this great line.  I highly recommend.
