The SmallRig x Potato Jet TRIBEX hydraulic carbon fiber tripod made waves last year with its groundbreaking X-Clutch single lock method for quickly adjusting all three tripod legs at the same time. Now, the SmallRig x Potato Jet TRIBEX SE hydraulic tripod is here, sporting a lower price and smaller size than the original TRIBEX, but with that X-Clutch functionality still in place. All three legs can still be unlocked simultaneously with the trigger handle, making it easy to raise, lower, and reposition the tripod with just one hand. No messing with latches or leveling legs one at a time.
The TRIBEX SE is made from aluminum alloy instead of the original’s carbon fiber and can fold down into a smaller size than the original to allow it to fit into backpacks and 28” luggage. Other stats are similar, including its 9.8" to 66.1" operating height range (versus 10.6" to 66.1"), 13.2 lb load capacity (identical to the original), and a weight of 8.1 lb (versus 8.2 lb).
The SE’s fluid head is smaller and features a fixed counterbalance instead of a six-step system, so larger rigs will have to be carefully positioned. The new head uses a snap-on quick release plate instead of a sliding one, and lets you easily switch between Manfrotto and DJI RS-style plates, signaling that the SE might be best suited for single operators on the go who need to quickly switch between rigging styles.
Like the original TRIBEX, the TRIBEX SE has a center column you can raise and lower, as well as pan and tilt dampening knobs, and the ability to turn the X-Clutch 90° to make it more accessible in certain shooting scenarios. The X-Clutch system is an exciting breakthrough, and it’s nice to see it in a more affordably priced package.
