Hard light is like a cup of black coffee: pure, raw, exhilarating. Put in the hands of a skilled cinematographer, it can smother a scene with tension, develop a character faster than words, or steer an audience's eyes across the film screen. It is the boldest flavor of light but, like that cup of black coffee, its edge can be softened by adding the right ingredients.

Nanlite released its first tube lights three years prior to the release of the latest version, the PavoTube II X-Series. The original PavoTubes were a great, budget-friendly option for shooters, but there were a number of fair criticisms regarding the lights’ design and performance. Lighting your video scenes often requires the specific abilities offered by several types of lighting fixtures. While my on-set experience has made me more familiar with Fresnels, HMIs, and LED panels, I recently had the opportunity to try some of the latest LED strip lights, the Rainbow 2 and the Double Rainbow.
