Supporting PCIe 4.0 x4- and PCIe 5.0 x2-compatible M.2 2280 slots, this NVMe 2.0 SSD delivers up to 5000 MB/s sequential read and 4200 MB/s sequential write speeds—which is about 43% and 30% faster than the 970 EVO, respectively. It also has around 70% better power efficiency and features Modern Standby, allowing it to stay connected while in low-power mode.

The PCIe 5.0 x2 interface makes this SSD ideal for compatible ultra-thin laptops, since reducing the interface from four to two lanes reduces heat to deliver optimal, sustained performance. Additionally, RAID controllers usually allocate two PCIe lanes to each SSD, which would normally reduce their performance. However, there would be no performance drop with the 990 EVO. Other features include AES-256 encryption through TCG/Opal 2.0 and Microsoft eDrive.
