The newest DJI action camera is here. Meet the Osmo Action 5 Pro,  DJI’s latest release in its powerful Osmo Action lineup. While the Action 5 Pro shares a lot of the same built-in features of its predecessor—a 1/1.3” CMOS image sensor, 4K recording capabilities, and stabilization algorithms, for example—it also offers some new upgrades to make recording your next adventure even more intuitive.

A next-generation 1/1.3” CMOS sensor in the Action 5 Pro offers a 13.5-stop dynamic range for vibrant imagery. This range works for all video specifications, including the maximum resolution of 4K60 video, for high-dynamic low-light imaging and HDR recording. The Action 5 Pro can also capture 40MP photos and has an ultra-wide 155° field of view. Record your footage directly to the onboard 47GB storage or use the SD card slot.

Preview and frame your footage using the camera’s dual OLED touchscreens. Both screens offer a clear and vibrant picture—especially the rear screen, which has a peak brightness of 1000 cd/m². Both screens also feature a specialized AF coating that ensures the screens remain responsive even when wet. You can toggle the “Always On Display” mode to monitor recording duration and specifications for lower power consumption without needing to constantly tap the display. Both camera monitors support 10-bit D-Log M footage and 10-bit HLG modes with color recovery for accurate preview.

Familiar HorizonSteady and RockSteady stabilization algorithms keep your footage smooth no matter the terrain. New subject tracking intelligently detects people in front of the camera and adjusts composition to keep them centered in every frame.

I have the GoPro Hero 10 and 11, and the DJI Action 4. The DJI is better in low light, but it has no burst photo mode, which is useful underwater. The GoPro has the advantage that shoots 5.3K and you can get a 20 megapixel JPG from the video footage frame, or shoot raw still photos at 24-27 megapixels where you can adjust the white balance in post. It also allow you to shoot 3 - 5 frames in one second by a single shutter depress, which is good when fish is swimming by you. GoPro lens protector has hydrophobic coating that helps minimize water drops appearing in photos on the surface (although the coating wears out and you need to replace the protector after some months if you want this feature). Both DJI and GoPro have a slightly hard shoot button, and a little lag, but the burst mode works well. I am not sure if the Action 5 has burst mode.

What’s your opinion of this for still photography? Looking for an underwater camera good for snorkeling and comparing this to the Olympic but I don’t shoot much video now.

I was wondering the same thing, I have a TG-6 and was debating getting the dive housing or just getting an action 5 instead, looking at the sensor and MP the action 5 has better specs, just wondering if that would actually translate to better image quality as well. Most my diving would be max 60' and I've gotten depth warnings on the TG-6 at less so I'd prefer to not risk it.

Hi Mark -

Go with what you are comfortable with Mark. The  TG-6 is waterproof-rated to IPX8 for use underwater to depths of 50' / 15m. only. It would be hard to fault the  Osmo Action 5 Pro considering the price and feature set. The video quality is simply awesome!
