My next product shoot will likely be some ceramic mugs. Any tips on how to shoot those in terms of light, stand/base, etc?

I am dealing with an office light in my studio. So I took a piece of white cloth and put it over it and it difuses it nicely. I also often use a tent setup with a couple of little desk lamps outside of it.

Problems come when I have to shoot out of the manufacturing floor. Some of our products are far too big to move without a hoist setup. The overhead lights are miserable to deal with. I have tried using some small lights to counter them, but it is the best I have been able to do.

It will depend on the approximate size of the largest item you are trying to photograph, as well as the size of the shooting space in which you are located.  For assistance with options that may help for your photographic needs, I would recommend e-mailing us at [email protected]​ with the size of your largest object, the size of your shooting area, and the budget you may have for purchasing equipment that may assist your photographic needs.  If you can also include what type of products you will be photographing, and if you do not have a budget, give us ideas of diffusion items that may be present in your area, that would also be of assistance to providing you with options that may work for your usage needs.

Your tips for beginners’ product shooting was great! As a beginner can you offer tips on shooting earrings with delicate chains/beads that hang 2.5”. Macro won’t capture the length and I must hang the product. Thanks!!

If you intend to hang the earrings, you can still use a macro lens or a prime lens. However, that may involve backing the camera up enough so that the entire set of earrings is filling the frame. Also, shooting with strobes as mentioned in the video would give you a lot more light output, thus a greater depth of field.
