Podcast: Limitless - Discussing the L-Mount Alliance with Sigma, Leica, and Panasonic
05/27/2021Not quite three years old, the L-Mount Alliance has already proven successful for its signatory companies—Leica, Sigma, and Panasonic. Built upon the foundation of the Leica L lens mount, the three makers have released a total of nine cameras and a range of lenses, all compatible with each other.
On this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we welcome Marc Farb, Technical Rep from Sigma, John Kreidler, Product Specialist from Leica, and Sean Robinson, Marketing Specialist from Panasonic and host of LUMIX Live, to discuss the beginnings of the L-Mount Alliance, the benefits for each company and for photographers, and to mention some of the latest and favorite cameras and lenses from the partnership.

I think this is a brilliant move on the part of these companies to standardize. I moved to Canon many years ago because the brand I was using didn't have enough lenses available, while simultaneously moving up from APS-C to full-frame. Consumers being able to start with a more affordable camera body or lens, and step up to a higher quality product, gives them an excellent upgrade path with rich choices. Leica is well known. I'll be more interested in comparing some images they capture with those of Canon and Nikon'a flagships anything else.

Can three turkeys combine to produce an eagle?! There are two giants in photography sharing the Gold and Silver medals - Sony and Canon. This is followed by Fujifilm and Nikon sharing a respectable Bronze medal. Among the also rans, surely someone will emerge as the tallest midget. I suppose this alliance has a shot at it. Hmm, who else is left in the camera business, anyway? Oh, yes! Olympus. And Pentax. Alright, L-alliance, here's your chance to get past a dying camera company and a dead camera company to become the undisputed winner of the Tallest Midget award! Yee Haw!
